I don’t believe God wants all his followers to be financially rich. In fact, nothing makes me angrier than watching people in poorly-paid jobs being encouraged to up their giving by a preacher in an Armani suit and Prada shoes.
I do believe however, that God has promised to take care of his people. Writing in Philippians (4:19), Paul writes: ‘my God will meet all your needs according to his glorious riches in Christ Jesus.’ In The Message, a modern day paraphrase of the Bible, that verse is rewritten: ‘You can be sure that God will take care of everything you need, his generosity exceeding even yours in the glory that pours from Jesus. Our God and Father abounds in glory that just pours out into eternity.’
If money isn’t on your mind at the moment, you’re one of the fortunate few. Whether you have concerns about your employment situation, housing problems, mounting debts or are simply fearful for what the future might hold, it’s likely that you’ve been thinking about your finances more than ever this year.
My belief – backed up by the experience of my life – is that we only experience financial freedom when we hand our money over to God. I don’t mean physically go and hand it all in on a church offering plate; but rather to simply involve him in our financial decisions, asking him questions like – when should I spend? Where and how should I save? When perhaps should I give some of it away?
